How to Clean Windows

Keeping your house windows clean can go a long way in improving the beauty and aesthetics of your home. You may not realize it, but over time, the window glass will accumulate a layer of dust, pollen, and other grime. Cleaning your windows from time to time will keep them looking like new while allowing the beauty of your windows to shine through. You may even notice that more sunlight can enter through the windows for a brighter and more vibrant home interior. If you’re not sure how to clean your windows, here’s a step-by-step guide.

Preparing the Window Glass

When most people think about cleaning their windows, they immediately think of the glass. This makes up the largest surface area of the window and is important to clean from time to time. Depending on how dusty your windows are, you may want to start by vacuuming the windows or wiping them down with a dry rag. This clears the surface for the actual cleaning. This is a good time to wipe down the rest of your window frame as well.

Choosing your Window Cleaner

To clean your window glass, you have a couple of different options. You can use a window cleaning solution specifically designed for glass surfaces. These cleaners will avoid streaks while helping to dissolve any dirt to clean your windows. However, if you don’t have window cleaner handy or would like to make your own window cleaning solution, you can dilute ¼ cup of white vinegar in 2 cups of water. You can also add a few drops of dish soap or rubbing alcohol to the solution. Mix these ingredients well in a spray bottle, and you’re good to go.

Choosing Your Cloth

With your window cleaner in hand, you’ll next want to choose a cloth for wiping down the windows. Microfiber cloths are a great option because of their absorbency and lint-free qualities. You can also choose high-quality paper towels. With your supplies in hand, you’re all set to clean your windows.

Spraying and Wiping the Windows

Simply spray your cleaner liberally on the glass and wipe it down. You’ll want to do this for both the inside of the glass and the outside if accessible for the best results. For the outside of your windows, you’ll likely need to remove the window screen to access that side of the glass. Additionally, you may find that it’s best to do this on a cooler or more overcast day so that the window cleaner doesn’t dry on the glass before you’re able to wipe it off. Once you’re done, you can pop your window screens back in place, and you’re good to go! You’ll likely be amazed at what a difference it makes once your windows are properly cleaned.
