Maintaining My Impact Windows

Impact windows are a smart investment that will provide years of reliable protection for your home. But to ensure your impact windows are able to effectively protect your home from sudden impact from intruders or during inclement weather, you’ll want to make sure you’re properly maintaining your windows over the years. Here’s how to do that:

Clean Your Windows Regularly

One of the most important aspects of maintaining your impact windows is giving them a proper cleaning from time to time. While it’s not something you need to do all that regularly, a thorough cleaning inside and out can keep your windows looking and performing at their best.

For the glass, make sure you use glass cleaner and a non-abrasive fabric like microfiber. It may be best to avoid cleaning your windows on sunny days, as your cleaning chemicals may dry up on the glass too quickly, leaving watermarks that are counterproductive. Be gentle with your windows, and make sure you avoid harsh chemicals, scrapers, and other tools that may scratch your windows.

Similarly, wipe your window frames down with a soft cloth and an appropriate cleaner for the type of window frame you have. Once you’ve wiped down the inside and outside of your windows, you’re good to go.

Inspect Your Windows on Occasion

Another important part of maintaining your impact windows is to inspect them a couple of times a year for any signs of damage or deterioration. Inspecting your windows after any inclement weather may also be helpful to find and address damage promptly.

Your window inspection should include both the inside and outside of the window to the best of your ability. In particular, you’ll want to look at the edges of the window frame, ensuring the caulk forms a solid seal around your window. You can also check the weatherstripping for signs of deterioration. While these elements may wear down a little sooner than the window frame or the glass, they’re also easy elements to address. If your window needs recaulking or new weatherstripping, you can easily do these projects yourself to help ensure your impact windows can perform at their best.

If your windows have been damaged following a storm or you’ve noticed more significant signs of damage to one or more of your windows, it’s best to contact a local window company. If your windows are still under warranty, this damage may be covered. If your windows are older, it may be time to consider a full window replacement instead.
